How a 46-word experiment became a magazine
46Short began as a late-night challenge: could a complete story fit in 46 words? Friends submitted, argued over word counts, and fell in love with the form. Six years later, that constraint still shapes everything we publish, pushing writers toward precision and readers toward imagination.
Today we work with over 600 contributors across 34 countries, each piece hand-selected by our rotating editorial panel of authors, journalists, and former MFA candidates.

Brevity as craft
Constraints sharpen voice. We treat compression as a literary discipline, not a gimmick, and honor writers who make every syllable count.
Quiet ambition
The best short work doesn't shout. We champion stories that trust silence, subtext, and the reader's own emotional intelligence.
Paying writers fairly
Every published author receives compensation on day one. Literary work deserves the same respect as any professional craft.
The most surprising literary magazine of the decade, proof that attention, not length, is the real measure of a story.

The way we work
Every submission is read blind by at least two editors. We respond within ten days, often sooner. Stories are chosen on emotional resonance, language, and originality of form. We reject more than we publish, and we always try to do it kindly.
Behind the scenes, our editorial calendar is shaped by guest curators, seasonal themes, and the quiet intuition of editors who read until something stops them mid-sentence.
